Since I am revamping this project I thought I would post a list of my favourite adventures from the past. Reading over this project that spans a few years I was surprised, embarrassed, and happy to find old treasures. It is funny how your views and opinions of things can change over a relatively short period of time. I started this blog in 2007. However some of the older pictures look like pictures that I would take today - I guess my original views and angles are embedded deep within.

I am really proud of this adventure. I felt really lucky to receive the special tour of the church. I was able to freely ask questions and take photos of whatever I wanted. It was really special.

Westfield Heritage Village

Lister Block Heating Unit
This is the other adventure that I am really proud of. I loved having a conversation with the security guard and learning more about a piece of Hamilton's history. That heating unit has been knocked down and there is a parking lot in that space now. I'm really glad I did this one.

Tiffany Falls

That was a nice look at the past. I am excited for many more great adventures in the future.

Winter

Here are some pretty winter shots of Hamilton that I took on my way to work last week.
This is the Gore Park fountain. I've taken pictures of this many times, but something about the sunlight and the shadows caught my eye. I couldn't help but to take another picture.

This is the overpass by Dundurn st., near The Spectator. Something about this view is really magical to me. Whenever I walk past this (and it is on a daily basis) I always stop and look.

Red Hill Valley In the Fall

One of the reasons I stepped away from the blog was that I developed quite the running habit over the past year. I love running all over Hamilton. From Confederation Park, to the Devils Punch Bowl, to Webster's Falls - there are so many amazing natural trails to run in Hamilton.

The trail that holds the dearest spot in my heart is the Red Hill Valley. Here are some photos that I took earlier this fall.

This place is really special to me. I have ran through those trails hundreds of times. I go there very often, nothing will get you out of a funk, or out of a stressful situation, better than a solitary run through a beautiful trail. It resets all of the switches and brings your soul back to neutral.

There are many ways to get to this trail. The best are 1) Park at Albion Falls and walk down past the falls to the trail. Or 2 -There is a small parking lot at the Greenhill exit of the Red Hill Expressway.

I have to first of all give praise to whoever created your theme and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an fabulous article. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that only very few posses and honestly you got it. The combining of demonstrative and upper-class content is by all odds super rare with the astronomic amount of blogs on the cyberspace.

After an extended absence where I got sidetracked with other projects and hobbies - Explore Hamilton is back. In a large way.

While I have been away from blogging, I've never been away from exploring Hamilton and photography.

So, yes, I am back and better than ever, baby. Let's get to it.

The thing about Confederation Park

Imagine if Lake Ontario was clean? The possibilities would be endless, at the very least I wouldn't have to drive over an hour to find a decent beach, it would all be right here in the Hammer.

I've been away for a while, I went to Europe and focused on some other things...but the blog is back! Thanks to anyone who still checks back.

It is a waste of natural space because only a select few get to enjoy it. I don't see what is wonderful about it.

Thanks for the trespassing tip.

Also, I'm being 'ridiculous' not, 'rediculous'.

This made me really mad. It's not that someone is being rude to me online, because a certain amount of that should be expected on the internet. Whenever you put something out there you should be prepared to have it judged.

It is the central message of this comment. The claim that to enjoy nature you should have to fork over the cash.

The notion that a well manicured natural space is for the privileged to enjoy is horrible.

Golf Courses are a complete waste of natural space. Nothing will ever change my mind about this.

Burlington Rib Fest

After a long summer hiatus Explore Hamilton is back. If anyone is still checking back - thank you(!) and I apologize for the absence.

The annual Burlington Rib Fest was calling my name this year, it was the first time I've been. Also, surprising to most people, this was the first time I've eaten "ribs" - prepared like this.

This was a silver jewlery stand. I really liked how fancy their tent was.

A one-stop-shop for all of your classy t-shirts.

Festival cover-bands are never good. These guys were no exception.

I decided to get my ribs from this place because they had the longest lines.

Not exactly appetizing.

..my fist rib fest experience was good. I can't see myself eating ribs like these on a regular basis because I found them to be really sweet and too rare for my tastes. The first piece or two were good, but it was a challenge to finish the "1/2 rack".

The weather was perfect that day.

I realize that the quality of these pictures isn't the greatest. It was a last minute decision to go there so I just grabbed my small digital camera. In hindsight, I should have brought my Cannon and taken some real pictures, but these are good enough to document the event.

The rib fest was a neat experience; I have never been to anything like it. It was a fun way to say goodbye to summer.

Abandoned Cities

Check out this amazing website I found today: Web Urbanist, they have this article about abandoned cities, that is amazing. The pictures featured in the article are really special.

That is something that I would like to explore in the nearer future, and abandoned, or nearly abandoned, city or town in Ontario.

Binbrook Conservation - Hiking Trail

My adventure this week took place at the Binbrook Conservation area. This is a very well kept park with long hiking trails and access to the lake, which I believe runs off the Grand River - but I could be wrong.

This is easy to get to, and is just a few turns off Centennial Parkway.

The mosquitoes that day were out in full force, and I was attacked in a big way. I still have red splotches all over my legs and arms.

..and a handful of beautiful wild raspberries which were delicious. This is my favourite picture of the bunch because I had to sit my camera on a ledge and position the camera to have proper focus and everything; it took a few shots to get it right. Tricky business.

My most favourite fruit in the world: wild strawberries.

Lady bug

This plant is very good for tea, I forget how to say it in english.

A random lookout platform. It is pretty high and it offers some great views of the park.

I had an awesome time at this park, it would be great to come back to it with a bike as all of the trails are maintained well. The wild berries were a really nice surprise, they inspired us to go strawberry picking at a farm near the park. The best part of summer in Hamilton are all of the "pick your own.." farms.

Vanishing Point

Do you know about Vanishing Point?

If not, you need to check it out right now. It is an amazing urban exploration website focusing on our part of Ontario. It is exceptionally done by a fellow Hamiltonian.

The quality of the pictures is outstanding, but what really gets me is the brilliant idea for this website. I wish I would have thought of that myself.

This is a website about exploring some of those spaces, about immersing oneself in stormwater sewers and utility tunnels and abandoned industry, about tapping into the worlds that are embedded in our urban environment yet are decidedly removed from the collective experience of civilized life. This is a website about spaces that exist at the boundaries of modern control, as concessions to the landscape, as the debris left by economic transition, as evidence of the transient nature of our place upon this earth.

Sam Lawrence Park

I took these pictures during a lovely family excursion to Sam Lawrence Park. This is where my header banner pictures is from. This park is one of the great parks of Hamilton, well manicured and very popular with the locals.

The day I was there the park was filled with everyone from strolling seniors, to young lovers on blankets.

Explore Burlington - La Salle Park

A few weeks ago, I took a walk through La Salle Park in Burlington, I'm late posting the pictures, but here they are. I have been to this park before, it is really nice and excellent for exploring different parts and aspects of it.

Many people get married at the banquet hall in the park, but I am more interested in the lake and forest trails.

To me, the best part of this park is how well the trails are taken care of. It is a joy to walk through the forest on this wooden path, it is also really great for unkind weather, wheelchairs, bikes, strollers..etc.

This pesky squirell followed me for a while. At one point, I feared that it would jump on me because it was above me on a branch looking at me in a very sinister fashion.

I love this bird house. I love the faded paint most of all.

Don't mess with those ducks man, they will f&*# you up.

I'm not going to lie, this sign scared me a little. Snakes are my kryptonite.

I hope this man wasn't planning on eating those fish. I like his snappy fishing outfit. Well played.

I was sternly warned against following this family of geese, the parents can get quite protective of the young. I threw caution to the wind and followed them anyway. Slowly..and carefully.

The young geese were adorable.

Sadly, if you move your camera in certain directions the reality of our "great~~ly polluted~~ lakes" becomes clear.

La Salle park is awesome. If you are in Burlington and are wanting to visit the lake, this park is far more interesting than the more popular Lakeshore beach strip.

St. Paul's Church

This church is gorgeous. This is one church that I've always wanted to explore. While the exterior is a gorgeous sight on its own, I've always wanted to see the interior. I've called and left a few messages but I haven't really gotten anywhere with anyone about setting up a tour. Can you just walk in with a camera and take pictures? I doubt it, but I'm not sure.

I've sat on these stairs many-a-time while waiting for the bus.

This is my favourite picture of the set. There is something so beautiful about the aged headstone and the bright vibrant grass and flowers sprouting up.

I'm not quite sure what this is all about. These headstones(?) line the bottom of the right side of the church. The side with the mini graveyard.

R.I.P. John Miller

A solemn way to end the set.

The most darling thing happened to me while I was taking pictures of this church. An elderly Italian man came up to me and asked me about my camera. He had a very charming accent. He told me that when he was young he loved taking pictures. We talked about lenses for a while.

He summed up the love of photography like this: First you take the picture, then you develop the picture, then you have something very nice. Well said.

Church of Ascension

I had a few hours to kill while my sister was getting her 'hair did' a while ago. I always bring my camera for these sort of time killing situations. This church is such a gem.

While I was taking pictures a random man came up to me and told me that there was a lovely Magnolia tree behind the church that I should check out.

This is located downtown just below the 'mountain' near the hospital.

Such a lovely view. This is at the back of the property.

I would really like to go inside this church to take pictures, but I don't know how to set that up. Any tips?

A hike through Albion Falls

Over the May 24th long weekend I took a hike from the King's Forest Golf Course to the Albion Falls. It took a good hour to reach the falls and there were some risky spots with my camera - - which is why I didn't take too many pictures.

Some parts were amazing and I just had to stop and get my camera out to capture them.

Topsy Turvyyy waterfall

The waterfall itself was disappointing. The water flow was weaker than I've seen it in years and I decided not to take too many pictures of it. I'd rather come back after a heavy rainfall to capture the falls in their glory.

St.Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church

This adventure took place at the St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox church on Barton St East. This is a church that I've visited many times with my family as I am Serbian Orthodox. I usually feel awkward about taking pictures in churches but this was during a tourism open house day. so I felt at ease to let my camera work its magic.

It is customary to cross yourself three times before entering the church

In cyrylics this says: The Serbian Orthodox Church of St.Nicholas

The women stand on the left, and the man stand on the right. Nobody sits. Seats are for the very old or ill. I've seen many church faintings, it can get hot and crowded.

This church is very unique and is beautifuly decorated. You should check out an Orthodox church if you ever get the chance.

McNab Presbyterian / Whitehern Mansion

I've wanted to explore this McNab area for a long time, especialy the church. How gorgeous is this area of Hamilton?!. The neat thing is that it doesn't even look like the rest of Hamilton, it is like a block of Montreal transplanted downtown.

The church was locked so I couldn't get inside, too bad. Whitehern Mansion was really beautiful too, what a neat property.

I believe that this clock is accurate.

In the memory of Calvin McQueensten, M.D 1801-1885

Who cam eto Hamilton from New Hampshire in 1835, joined his cousin John Fisher and established the first iron foundry in this city.

He was the first president of the Gore Bank and an active supporter of the Presbyterian Church.

Whitehern was purchased by Dr.McQueensten in the 1840's. He lived her for the remainder of his life.

Red Hill Valley

On the first beautiful spring weekend of the year I decided to take a hike to the Red Hill Valley.

Red Hill Valley has a special place in my heart because I live very close to it, and it was closely tied to my elementary education - often involving gym class runs, and science trips. When the whole expressway shamozel was first brought up I was very much against the idea of destroying this beautiful part of Hamilton in order to speed up some commutes.

When the expressway was built I was heartbroken to see that no one could stop City Hall. Much of the valley was destroyed for the expressway but some parts - namely the parts attached to Kings Golf Course, were preserved. That is where my adventure took place.

All of this was beautiful greenery before..

I'm not quite sure what happened here, but this tree has been like this since the fall.

This creek comes from Albion Falls - just a short hike away.

This is a new bridge. It goes over to the golf course part.

As you can see from the amount of pictures focused on it: I love water.

Sparkle sparkle

This one was a dangerous feat. I stood on top of some slippery rocks to get this shot, risking my dear cameras life, not to mention my own.

These guys flew around the entire time I was there. I kept waiting for them to fly lower so I could get a good picture, but apparantely they had other things in mind.

Best news ever: CLAY! I noticed that the bottom of the creek was white in spots and I thought it was snow. When I stuck a stick in it I realized that it was soft. A quick inspection with my fingers confirmed my hopes it was indeed clay.

I grabbed a chunk of it with my hands and made this bowl. I left it beside the clay in the ground. I took a ball of it home and have even used it on my face. Crazy, I know. But I feel that since it is natural that it can't hurt me. And guess what: it hasn't. It has produced great skin results!

This was a great adventure for me. The weather was amazing and the spring thaw brought a strong flow for the creek. Other people had the bright idea of coming here too, as there were countless dog walkers and joggers present.

I still feel that it is a shame that the valley got greatly reduced, but there is no sense not-enjoying what is left.

Curious Downtown Creatures

I was driving around Jackson Square the other day and I saw these out of the corner of my eye. Luckily the light turned red, and I was able to franticaly get my camera out and take some pictures. The two of them are on seperate buildings, just below each roof.

Man made Forest

I've driven past this building a few times in the last little while, it has always caught my attention. Finally, this past Friday, I decided that it was time for a closer look.

This building was even more stunning upon a closer look. The bottom of the building is signed by a female artist, and the art work is dated August 2007. I guess I haven't been in that part of the city in a while, otherwise I would have remembered this building.

What a great idea?! A forest in the middle of downtown Hamilton? Yes please. Wouldn't it be amazing if there was some sort of a movement, or incentive, for more downtown buildings to feature 'nature' themed facades? I think that it would be awesome, I mean, these buildings are there anyway, it would be so much prettier if they looked like trees..mountains..waterfalls...etc.

This will be my platform when I run for Mayor.

Glendale Golf and Country

Last week I bought a beautiful camera, and since we got 30 cm of new snow and it was a sunny day, I decided to take it out for a spin. Glendale Golf and Country club is located on Mnt Albion Road in Hamilton's east end. Taking the Greenhill exit off ~~the unnecessary environment ruin~~ the Red Hill Expressway, will get you there in 2 minutes.

I am not a Golf and/or Country Club person at all. I think that it is a dated idea, and a waste of natural space. Why should a wealthy few get to enjoy a prime peace of nature, while the rest of us watch from behind the gates? Ridiculous.

Anyway, the Glendale Golf club is located under the escarpment, and directly underneath the Bruce Trail. It is a gorgeous hilly property, with many streams and weeping willows. In the winter, it is made even more magnificent when it is covered with snow. Since the golfers have to sit the season out, the property is taken over by toboggans, sleds, and snowboards.

Because of the size of the property, and the variety of hills, this place is perfect for snow sports.

This was a mean slope. I couldn't resist taking a turn down this bad boy, I got a jacket full of snow as a result. Snow in the pockets, socks, pants, everywhere. Brr.

These kids and their space age snow toys were intense.

This stream is my favorite part of this property. The ice was thinner than it appeared and I got my boot quite stuck in it.

I took this as a mere suggestion..

This is very cool. It looks like a meteor hit the spot.

I'm not entirely sure if this is considered trespassing, I'll just put this awesome idea out there. You know..you do with it what you want. It's all yours.

Hamilton, 1859

Downtown Walk

Two days ago I took a walk downtown before lunch. I was there with the specific intention of finding and photographing a variety of alleys. However, due to the -20 windchill, my adventures were cut short. It was incredibly cold and windy, and I could not take any prolonged walking around. Taking my camera out and setting up the shots was enough for my hands to turn red from the bitter cold.

The Church pictures are from St.Mary's Slovenian Church. It is on McNab Street.

The alley pics were taken around Cannon and James st.

This statue is at the top of St. Mary's, facing the south side.

I love the top of that building. Also, MEX-I-CAN is a good authentic Mexican restaurant.

This was the gate entrance to an alley separating a Ballet school and a European Barber.

This is a block down. I like the fancy design.

This is the back of a building near Cannon and John St. I liked the red.

Without mittens, my hands freeze. But with mittens, I can't control anything on my camera. You win this round Canadian winter, but I'll be back. Oh yes.

Albion Falls

A little while ago I took a trip to Albion Falls after a minor snow storm. I have been to Albion Falls many many times, but never during the winter. It was a neat experience seeing it in this light. Everything was really slippery and the snow was deeper in some areas than others. I did not fall at any point, but I did have a few close calls.

Albion Falls is located in the east end, near the mountain brow.

Check it out! If not now, wait for the spring and check it out then.

My boots barely handeled this snow.

This cliff ends suddenly, and in snowy/muddy conditions it is easy to slip and fall. However, that didn't stop me from trying to inch down lower to see what the bottom looked like.

I loved these charming old steps to the top of the hill. These days, they just lead to road - I wonder what they lead to before.

I don't know if I would recommend walking around Albion Falls during the winter for everyone, at least not with children or older people. It can get pretty slippery, and since some of the cliffs, and walking paths, are so steep - it is really easy to slip and get hurt.

Other than the danger aspect, it was really quiet and peaceful.

Christmas is the time of year when Gore Park gets dolled up for one and all.

The best thing about Christmas at Gore Park this year is: no deer. For years, I've ranted and complained about the poor deer that were locked up there for weeks in that cramped space. People would throw trash in, smoke around them, and not to mention the rest of the downtown pollutants that the deer had to deal with. This year, instead of deer, we got a fancy ride.

Well played City of Hamilton.

I tried to take a picture of these birds that were sitting on a branch, but they had other things in mind and would not stick around for me to adjust my focus.

No Deer were humiliated in the making of this Gore Park center piece.

The fountain looks so classy when it is filled with snow, rather than filthy water like in the summer.

Centenary United Church

For as long as I have wandered around downtown, I have wondered about the Centenary United Church. The massive size of it, the bright purple entrance, the location, everything about this place has been peaking my interest for years. One day, this past October, I finally decided to put my curiosities to rest. I googled the name, and found that there was an official website for the church. How modern, and convenient! After reading up on the history, and some happenings, I discovered Reverend Wayne Irwin's email. I quickly sent an email asking if I could have a tour of his stunning building, and he agreed!

I really have to thank Rev.Wayne Irwin for his informative tour, he answered all of my questions, and gave me plenty of opportunities of take pictures along the way. I really appreciate his kindness and willingness to help me.

Instead of reading my summary of Centenary United's history, you can find it - in rich detail, on the website.

This amazing building opened in 1868, and has had minor renovations, additions, and subtractions, since then. For example, the back end - facing the office building on King St., was once extended. Sometime in the not too distant past, the back end of the building was destroyed, and the land sold to be used for parking - as it is still being used today.

The purple entrance that first caught my eye. This entrance, that faces Main St., used to be the main way in - this has been changed to a side door.

..and this is it. The main entrance.

Tucked away in that small charming building are the administrative offices.

Since 1868, people have been walking up and down these original marble stairs. It is amazing to think of all of the people who have used them, and their stories and reasons for visiting the church.

Those chairs provide additional seating in the front, and can be moved around to accommodate wheel chair users. For the most part,
Centenary United is very accessible.

This, brand new, state of the art keyboard, controlls one of the oldest, and biggest organs in Hamilton.

These are massive in size, and were being maintained when I was there on my tour.

Mixing the old with the new: This mixing board controls all of the audio.

Hidden deep in the basement of the building, this is the power house of the organ. The air that powers the pipes is pumped from this central location. It is very clausterphobic in there.

United Centenary participates in the "Out of the Cold" program, and provides shelter and food for people seeking it, in the cold months of the year. This kitchen is where the food is prepared by the numerous volunteers that support the program. Rev. Irwin told me that another place of worship that supports this program is the synogauge in Westdale, along with other churches downtown.

This is a very charming tea room, this can be rented out for celebrations.

One of the few meeting spaces.

A feature on Taize - The Christian worship focusing on silence and meditation. This article is about their visit to Centenary United.

This room is dedicated to Taize worship, and is filled with beautiful orange furniture and fabrics.

This is one of the many things dedicated to the memory
and work of Martha Cartmell.

These 2000 cranes were a gift to the chuch from the Japanese students who went to Martha Cartmell's church.

As I learned, these gates were used back when the church was first built, and when the main entrance faced Main St.

The biggest reason for why I have been sitting on this adventure for months ( I went there before Hallowe'en ) is because I was overwhelmed by the amount of pictures I took. I came home with 100 pictures, and I knew there was no way I could describe and display all of them, and It took me a long time to sift through them and pick the most appropriate ones to show.

This was a really special adventure for me, and I high suggest that you to stop by and check out the beauty of one of Hamilton's oldest churches.

Canterbury Hills

I stumbled upon Canterbury Hills yesterday. We took a side street in Ancaster and I saw a sign pointing to a road going uphill, the wooden sign said Canterbury Hills, I was intrigued.

It turns out that Canterbury Hills is an Anglican camp ground / Conference Centre / Brownie's Station /Environmental Preserve.

This is what their website says, "Canterbury Hills is situated in the Dundas Valley on 72 beautiful acres of unique Carolinian Forest, just 18 minutes from downtown Hamilton."

This place was so quiet, and creepy, and beautiful. I am disappointed that I didn't discover this place before the snow fell. It was hard to walk around and check out the property, when everything was covered in snow, and I was grossly under dressed for the weather - as per usual.

I could not believe the amount of deer tracks I saw on the property - an overwhelming amount. Sadly, no deer sightings.

I risked my life, and the life of my camera, climbing down these ice covered wooden steps.

These wooden steps are all over the place. Can you see the deer tracks?

Sadly, I did not go down to the water. By this point, my walking shoes and jeans were soaked.

This is looking at the narrow dirt road that takes you to the property. I was scared for my life on these roads because there was so much ice and they are so narrow, I don't know what I would have done if another car tried to drive past us in the opposite direction.

Walking around, I realized that this place is just begging to be explored -by me. I saw signs pointing to turtle ponds, creeks, and I even saw a babbling waterfall from a distance. And you know how I love a good waterfall! Sadly, the snow put a real damper on my exploration. I will be back in the spring Canterbury!

Canadian National Railways Station

The Canadian National Railways Station, in Hamilton is at 360 James Street North , and it was designated a Heritage Railway Station in 1991.

I wanted to go inside, but all of the doors were locked and a woman that walked by inside gave me a look that was less than..hospitable. So, I settled with taking pictures of the outisde area. Maybe one day I'll get inside..one day.

This statue is beautiful in person, and in photo. I think that is fresh basil someone has placed in her hands, but I could be wrong. It looked like basil to me, but I'm no herb expert.

I find these lions to be very creepy. Their faces are almost human-like, and they look so angry. This was the base of a water fountain also on this property.

Romanian Orthodox Church

These pictures were taken two blocks north of Bayfront Park. I've never seen a Romanian Orthodox Church before. This building was tucked in between some houses.

For some reason it seemed so out of place on that street.

Ever since the Incredible Hulk set building began on Main St., downtown has been very exciting. It is so great to see so many non-sketchy pedestrians walking around Main St, it is certainly a welcomed change.

Last week I decided to walk over to see what all of the fuss was about.

The official movie site doesn't have that much information, but here it is anyway.

This is the bus that gets set on fire in the movie.

Whoa, big lights.

That basketball court must be a part of the set too, it wasn't there before.

This is cool, but I don't think they had to schlep garbage into Hamilton, we have plenty of hometown garbage to share.

I can't wait until the movie comes out, it's always fun to pick out parts of Hamilton in the movies that were shot here.

I hope it is much better than that Ang Lee disaster. Edward Norton never let's me down, so I hope that it will be pretty good.

Old Postcards of Hamilton

I was searching around the web and I found this random website that had postcards of old Ontario towns. After some heavy clicking, I found the direct website for Old Hamilton Postcards.

The postcards are beautiful, it is interesting to see those images and to realize what those places look like now.

If anyone has a time machine kicking around, I'd like to borrow it and take a spin in 1901 Hamilton.

Westfield Heritage Village

This week's second adventure took place at the Westfield Heritage Village, in Rocton. I realize that this blog is centered around places in Hamilton - but this place is just a 30 minute drive from downtown Hamilton, and is so neat, I just had to include it. You can find directions on their website.

I have been here twice, years ago, so I thought that it would be nice to give it another visit.

I just had to take a picture of this garbage station. Hmm..something tells me that recycling wasn't really a top priority back then. Although, there probably weren't too many things that needed to be recycled. We have a lot more packaging and various man-made materials than they did back in those days.. It is a nice touch, I like how they have kept it in the theme of the park..

This is a popular place for wedding pictures. In the gazebo.

This is really neat. Imagine if these were all over Hamilton, around trees in parks and trails..

I found this building to be the creepiest of them all. Something about this 'ice house' screams: buddy system.

The little white paper sign on the door reads: "Pleeze use back door". Pleeze.

Fall is a good season for photography.

Go to the website and check out the event listings. They have several "Haunted Ghost Walks" planned for 2007-2008 - Although, I wonder how Haunted this really is, since I don't think that many of these buildings were ever used for anything other than the park performances and displays. Either way, I found the place pretty eerie. When I went, the park was open for people to walk around and explore on their own, rog and I were the only ones there. Each time I looked in a window I expected someone, or something, to look back at me. The village is really neat and strange at the same time..check it out and let me know what you think..

Tew's Falls

This week's first adventure took me to Tew's Falls in Dundas. The Tew's Falls are located on the Hamilton (Dundas Valley) Conservation Area, and are a short distance away from Webster's Falls. The drive there is pretty simple. Just take main street past McMaster and straight into Dundas. Take it straight past the library and up the hill. Once you are on the hill, there are signs pointing in the direction of the falls. There is plenty of parking once you get there.

This place is GORGEOUS. I really can't say enough, you have to check it out for yourself.

The park is really well taken care of, these observation podiums are great.

There are stairs that lead to the Dundas Peak - I didn't go all the way up because I am paranoid about a snake sighting. I just went up to the next observation podium for another view of the falls.

I loved the Tew's Falls, but pictures only show so much, you should really explore the place on your own. Pictures can not capture the babbling sounds of the water and the smells of nature.

Upper James mountain access

I've driven past this wall structure many-a-time on Upper James, but I have never stopped by to take a closer look. You have to park at one of the side streets across the street and make a mad dash across the busy mountain access to make it to this park. The death defying adventure is well worth it, this place is beautiful.

I don't really know what these walls stand for, it doesn't look like they were ever a part of any structure. They must have been built purely as decoration and as a part of the memorial plaque. Behind the walls is a set of mountain access stairs, although I would not recommend taking the stairs past dusk as things can get a tad..creepy.

Battlefield Park

I have been to t he Battlefield Park many times, and have overlooked it for a possible adventure for explorehamilton. I was recently talking to someone and they didn't know that this place even existed, so I figured that anyone not familiar with the east end/stoney creek, wouldn't know much about it..and that lead to this post.

It certainly is.

I've been inside the castle a few times, it is just a staircase that lets you climb to the top - and the look out deck. It's pretty neat.

A door to wonderland? Probably not. I opened it, not too exciting, I think it is storage.

This is the old Jackson house. It used to be located at the corner of Nash and King, it was in a Cherry orchard. Sadly, the orchard was ripped out and town houses were built. The Jackson house was moved to this location. Read more about this here.

The house was closed up, but I did manage to peek my camera though the curtains to get this interior shot.

Lots and lots of flowers!

Battlefield Park is great for walking, hiking, and picnics. It is also often used for wedding pictures. I have walked around the park a million times, and I suggest that you plan a trip to Stoney Creek to see it too. It is free to park and explore the property, and there are fees and hours for museum tours.

Olde Towne Stoney Creek

This fountain has been 'down town' Stoney Creek for many years. It used to be plain, with out any statues, they were just added a few years ago. A funny local prank used to be to sneak there at night and pour laundry soap into the fountain. In the morning, King St. would be full of foam. I swear, the joke never got old, those zany kids and their pranks. Fortunately, or unfortunately, after the man and the eagle were installed, the foam party was no more.

Now people walk there to relax, chat, and watch the fountain. While I was there today, a few little girls were splashing around in the fountain. I was envious, I didn't think that it would be as cute if I did the same. Maybe one day..

You should get a coffee, or an ice cream, and take a walk around Olde Towne Stoney Creek, it's very charming. Here is a map of the downtown/fountain area.

The "Ivan Delicatessen" in the back, is an old Croatian bakery / travel agency. They sell great smoked ham and various imported European treats.

These roses smelled very nice. I broke a little flower off and took it home, then the guilt set in. I'm sorry downtown stoney creek...I regret stealing the flower.

Right behind the fountain is the Old Powerhouse Restaurant. It is gorgeous on the inside, and has a patio in the back that is surrounded with Weeping Willow trees. The only downside is the food, which for a restaurant - is quite the downside. The menu is very limited, and the food is overpriced. It is a nice place for some wine and pastries. It is also a nice place for a date.

East End Hamilton is Lush

Whenever I tell someone that I live in the 'east end', I almost always get a negative response. "East End?, Really?, isn't that like really dangerous?".
I blame it on Barton Street, it really muddies the water for the rest of the east end, which rocks. One of the best parts of the east end is the green space. The Bruce Trail, Devil's Punchbowl, two golf courses, Confederation Park, Battlefield Caste..and so on...are all in the east end.

These are a few pictures that I recently took on an evening walk, here is a map of the general area.

On a clear day, you can see all the way to Burlington, and even Toronto, from this hill.
I believe that this is some sort of a water treatment building, I could be wrong. There are 'Warning: Chemicals" signs everywhere, and I've never seen anyone going in or out, or working there in any capacity. For the past 10 years, this building has been a mystery to me.

Garth Stairs

Today's adventure took place at the Garth Street Stairs. I realize that most people have seen these stairs, driven past them, or even taken them up or down the mountain, at some point. If not the Garth stairs, then maybe some of the other stairs that scale the escarpment.

Someone has counted, and numbered, the stairs, and I believe that there are around 300. When we were there, there were two guys running up and down..and up..and down. That is physical fitness, my friends. I remember walking up and down those stairs a few times during college - it was no walk in the park. My clearest memories are ones of panting and the urge to vomit. For someone living close to these stairs, or any of the other stairs, it is a great workout opportunity. Who needs a gym membership when you have an out door stair master, fresh air and creeps like me taking your picture while you try to get a good workout. I was getting in the way of the joggers, so I made this adventure a brief one. My quads thanked me.

To me, one of the greatest things about Hamilton, is the great amount of green space! Hamilton has so many forests, fields, parks, walking paths...and even outdoor fitness centers like this one.

Lister Block Heating Unit

A few sunny thursdays ago, I was walking around downtown waiting for inspiration to find me, when all of a sudden it hit me like a tone of bricks! I turned the corner at King William Street and saw an odd 'tower-esque' thing growing out of a parking lot.

I walked closer and was mesmerized by this tower/chimney structure. I was walking around and taking pictures of wires and the backs of the buildings when a security guard started approaching me. He was concerned about me walking around and taking pictures, thinking on my feet, I complimented him on his fine parking lot and asked what he knew of the structure. This lead into a 30minute discussion, it was wonderful. It turns out that I was standing directly behind the Lister Block, and this structure I was so taken by, was a chimney. A chimney that used to provide heat for the entire Lister Block! Apparantley, the reason the security guard wasn't originaly too fond of my snooping around with a camera, was because many people come by and sneak into the Lister Block to do drugs, have sex, or die. He said he found dead bodies inside once. (!!) I would like to take a peek inside before they restore the building, but I don't know if I have cahoonies for that sort of an adventure. Maybe I can get my new security friend to take me up there.

This place is a block away from Jackson Square, or a few steps away from the Pepper Jack Cafe. Check it out!

The security guard told me that he expects the top of the chimney to fall over in the next year. The years and the weathering have made the top very crooked.

I climbed over some garbage and old wires to take a gander inside the chimney. Very cool.

Downtown Sculptures

This adventure took place in a two block radius of downtown Hamilton; The roof of the Art Gallery, and the courtyard of City Hall. A few weeks ago, I was passing through this area on the bus and I happened to glance over and see a big sculpture. It caught my interest and I knew that I had to check the place out and see what the deal was. So, on a sunny monday morning, my sister and I travelled down and took the pictures you see below..

This thing is HUGE. I'm one of those people that will never understand how engineering works, and how they can make something of this magnitude stay put, and balance, while only being attached to the other piece by a small weld in the steel.

Engineering Ring.

This was a great adventure, the weather was perfect and it was really great to walk around main street and check out the cool sculptures. I've heard that there are a lot of sculptures around Hamilton, I'll try to check out some more over the summer.

While my sister and were taking pictures around the Sculpture Garden, a random man walked up to us and asked if we wanted him to take a picture of us together. I said.." Yeahh..suure", and he reached for my camera and said, "Don't worry, I'm NOT gonna steal yer camera". He took a decent picture, but it was funny that he had to point out that he, in fact, was NOT going to steal my camera. Oh Hamilton!

Tiffany Falls, vol. 2.0

The second adventure this week took place at another Tiffany Falls, the two falls have the same name because they both come from the same source. This is another place that I could not find a map for, because it is on the side of a road. When you take Main Street past McMaster and up to Ancaster, you will drive by the entrance to this area. There is a sign and enough parking for 2-4 cars.

This place was gorgeous, and really well groomed. It was a beautiful day and many people were out walking and enjoying the weather.

I hate when people remove their crampons on the bridge. Geez.

These little bridges are all over the place to help people cross the water.

There is a little balcony that you can stand on to look at the falls.

The falls are beauuutiful. The way the sunlight was catching in the water was really nice.

Best.View.Ever. I got wet from the heavy mist, but it was so worth it.

I just love waterfalls, there is something so powerful and so beautiful about something that is just water falling off a cliff. I will try to stay away from falls and conservation areas from now on. Time to diversify, and I'm sick of someone refering to this as my "Waterfall Website"..

The Hermitage..part 1

The first part of this weeks adventure took place at The Hermitage. It isn't technicaly Hamilton, but since Ancaster falls under the New City of Hamilton..I thought to include it. The reason this is The Hermitage, part 1, is because I saw a snake half way through and had to abort the mission. I don't work with snakes..I just can't handle it. Hopefully, I will bring more people with me next time and will able to complete the mission. This place is known for being super haunted, here is a link to the popular haunted history. I could not find a map to this place, so instead, I give you these easy to follow directions..

Driving Directions: From the 403, take the Rousseaux exit west to Ancaster. Follow Rousseaux to Wilson Street (2nd set of lights) and turn left onto Wilson. From Wilson Street, turn right onto Sulphur Springs Road. Turn right again at the stop sign. This is Sulphur Springs Road. Continue downhill into the valley until you see a small sign on your right for the Hermitage.

This old dignifed Hampton-esque couple was walking behind us the whole time. At one point they disapeared and on the way back we found them around this area..laying in the grass and smoking weed. It was 4/20..good for them.

Hopefully I'll be able to finish this soon, I need snake hypnosis or something..

Red Hill Expressway

This post is kind of sketch because it is exam season and this past weekend it was Easter, which is a big deal to us Orthdox folk. Needless to say, I havn't had much time for exploration adventures. I did go for a walk the other day and I brought my camera along for these pics of the Red Hill Valley.

I can not express to you how ANTI-EXPRESSWAY I am. I don't believe that shaving 20mins off your commute to work is worth destroying one of Ontario's most important watersheds, one of the only habitats for flying squirrels and countless other animals. Don't even get me started on the trees and nature that was destroyed in order to build this. I am full of HATE when it comes to this topic..and I could rant on and on..but let's get to the pictures.

I was walking along the path and was still able to spot some instances of natures perseverance and beauty. I did not take pics of the expressway, as I'm sure that anyone can imagine what a high way looks like.

Tiffany Falls

The more exciting adventure that I went on today was to Spencer George Wilderness Area, Tiffany Falls, to be more exact. It was AWESOME. Honestly, I can not even explain how excited I was. I've been there a few times before, and it never disapoints. The weather today was perfection, and the birds were out and chirping..it was a dream. I ended up taking about 200 pictures, I have my favourites posted here.

I don't realy know what this weird Tree-Land-House thing is...I bet that it is a horse holding pen of some sort. In the old country, people used to put wheat (hay) on the ground and stick a piece of wood in the middle - then tie a horse to that piece of wood and get it to walk around the hay. This would release all of the barley, or wheat or whatever, because the horse would walk in circles. I bet that this is what this tree-house was built for. No doubt in my mind.

This was the best day ever, I had so much fun at the falls. The park is realy well kept, I did not see a spot of litter anywhere and the grass and trees were well groomed. Who ever takes care of this place does an amazing job. Special travel considerations are courtesy of (the)Rog.

The Customs House - 51 Stuart Street.

Today I checked out the creepy old Customs House. This place has a long history in Hamilton, mostly a history of being haunted. I desperatley wanted to go in and take a gander, but all tours have to be pre-arranged. I had to settle for being a creep and taking photos from the street, and other than the Customs House, Stuart Street is pretty run down.

Haunted Hamilton has done a few stories on the Customs house, so has the tv show Creepy Canada, the stories about the 'dark lady' that haunts it, are terrifying. I'd like to go in..maybe one day...

There wasn't much else going on on Stuart St. Mostly run down factories and construction yards. I think the old Lakeport Brewery building is somewhere in that area too. The Customs House is a powerful building, I urge everyone to check it out. You can park at Bayfront park and walk there in under 2 minutes.

Dundurn Castle and Bayfront Park

I've decided to pick a fairly well known desitnation for my first Explore Hamilton Adventure. Dundurn Castle is featured on almost all Hamilton's tourism literature and promotion posters of all kinds. Everyone has been there at one time, most commonly for School Trips. No matter how well known it is, it is still pretty spectacular to me. Such crazy architecture, and many say it is haunted by Sir John A. Read up about one Dundurn Castle haunting story at Haunted Hamilton, Read with the lights on.
The pictures aren't anything fancy, just random things that caught my eye.

This is a weird path that leads to the edge of the cliff, it's fantastic.

Bayfront Park - I love going for walks there.

This is the view of the park from the fist picture - that clif path. I went on a hiking adventure down to those trains with roger a few years ago, it was super creepy. I like to call that the 'train cemetary', Too bad we didn't have a camera.

Frozen Lake. Too bad I didn't get there a few weeks earlier so that I could have walked on the ice. The cracking sounds of the ice breaking kept me away from that today....

The park is filled with these charming 'old country-esque' bird feeders. In the background, the boats are wrapped up for the winter.
